Learn Ukrainian Verbs
Ukrainian verbs use an aspectual system where every action has two forms — completed and ongoing. Understanding this distinction is the most important step toward natural Ukrainian speech.
Essential Ukrainian phrases
Building fluency in Ukrainian starts with verbs. Here are some everyday phrases that rely on getting the verb form right:
Why Ukrainian verbs are challenging
- Every verb has an imperfective/perfective aspect pair (e.g., читати/прочитати) and the wrong choice changes the meaning of a sentence.
- Verbs of motion distinguish between one-directional and multi-directional movement (йти vs. ходити), each with its own conjugation.
- Past tense verbs agree with the subject in gender and number rather than person, which is unfamiliar to English speakers.
- Prefixes (за-, ви-, пере-, при-) attach to verbs to create new meanings, and the resulting verbs often shift aspect as well.
